VCE Vocational Major: Literacy Units 3 and 4
Overview
VCE VM Literacy focuses on the skills and knowledge you need to read, write and communicate in a variety of settings.
In Unit 3, you will interact with a variety of text types – to establish their purpose, audience and meaning. You will have the opportunity to learn more about journalism, research topics of your choice, create texts for others and plan an epic holiday.
In Unit 4, you will explore the concept of advocacy – and learn what it means to advocate for yourself and others. You will have the opportunity to learn more about personal branding, advertising, famous advocates and causes that you are passionate about.
You will be able to apply this knowledge to your day-to-day life, current schooling and vocational situations.
Who is it for?
This subject is for eligible VCE VM students who enjoy reading, writing and communicating for practical purposes. Students who would like to go on to further vocational studies or enter the workforce will benefit from building a broad range of literacy skills and strategies.

- Reading, inferring and creating meaning from texts
- How to access and use reliable sources
- Identifying structures and features of different texts
- Written communication and text creation
- Oral communication – including eye contact, tone and body language
- Sentence structure, paragraphing, spelling and grammar
- Drafting, editing and revising
- Using persuasive language
Requirements
Internet is needed to access this course. All work will be completed and submitted online.
Things to think about
It is important to note that Literacy does not receive a study score, so it will not count to receiving an ATAR. If you are intending to study Literacy, you will be undertaking a VCE VM program with the intention of achieving a non-scored senior certificate.

Preparing for Literacy involves a combination of academic, practical and personal preparations. Here are some actionable steps you can take to get ready for the course:
- Organise your study environment
- Read as much as you can. ‘Reading’ includes all types of texts – books, newspapers, comics, blogs, songs, film.
- Be aware of everyday texts in the world around you
- Challenge yourself to learn a new word a day
- Practise your communication skills
