VSV’s Primary School does an incredible job educating and supporting almost 200 students across Victoria. Here you can meet their dedicated leadership team and get some great learning tips – regardless of your child’s age:

Cheryl Laing, Primary Sub School Leader and Learning Advisor

What do you love about your job?

I love working with the students and their families. I love working with a team of teachers who have a passion for teaching and their students. This job is varied, and we get to meet very interesting families from all over the world and people who are in unique situations.

Tip for parents/carers to support their child’s learning?

To be positive about learning. It also helps to be organised and to work alongside your child on the learning journey. It is a challenging role to be a supervisor and parent, so remember to treat yourself with care also.

Which VSV value do you identify with most and why?

All of them – too hard to choose. Empathy in understanding the unique situations of our students and families. Respect for the work we do with the people we care for. Collaboration because it is definitely a partnership with supervisors, students and teachers. And Growth, because every day at VSV I learn something new! Not one day is the same at VSV.

Something that made you smile recently?

When a student was able to sound out a word and read it independently for the first time – what a win! I was so happy!

Helen Stearman, Primary Instructional Leader

What do you love about your job?

Meeting so many interesting students and working with some amazing colleagues. I truly believe that every single student has something very special about them. I always try to bring that out, so that students believe in themselves.

Tip for parents/carers to support their child’s learning?

Children learn best when they are secure and happy and when they are ready. If we don’t understand something today, there is always tomorrow, the next term, the next year. Don’t mistake assessment and test results for teaching and learning.

Which VSV value do you identify with most and why?

Empathy. As an ex-Correspondence School student, I try to understand what our students and their families need to manage every day to survive and thrive.

Lynda Marcon, Primary Student Coordinator

What do you love about your job?

Being a part of a student’s learning journey and seeing them grow and develop over the year.

Tip for parents/carers to support their child’s learning?

Where appropriate, have the courage to give your children the freedom to be brave and allow them to make mistakes.

Which VSV value do you identify with most and why?

Definitely Growth. This is an area I feel I can support my students to help them be the best versions of themselves and to encourage them to ‘have a go’.

Something that made you smile recently?

Having Ava, one of my overseas quiet achieving students, share her love of crochet with me and showing me some of her skillful creations.
