Hugh is in Year 12. He is also an international racing car driver who embodies the VSV value of growth.

Here we get to know Hugh a bit better…

When did you join the VSV community?

I joined at the start of 2021 after I was selected to do the French formula 4 championship and had to move to France.

How long have you been doing FIA Formula 3 racing?

This was my first year, but I have been racing since I was 5.

Highlights of the year?

Qualifying fifth in my first race of the year against the best in the world

Challenges of the year?

Going to tracks I had minimal experience at and trying to piece together a qualifying lap.

What is your dream career?

My dream is to race in Formula 1 and win a championship. But any form of professional driving would be good whether that be IndyCar, sportscars, hypercar or something else!

What skills do you need for racing?

Resilience

In racing there are a lot more lows than highs due to the many variables. You need to bounce back after a tough race or session.

Determination

Because of the many lows in the sport you need to be determined and disciplined in improving yourself. It’s important to make the most of every situation since you don’t get many chances in this sport.

Self-awareness

You need to know what you need to improve while driving to avoid wasting time.

Teamwork

Racing may seem like a one-person sport but there are many people working together to maximise the results. Good communication and relationships with everyone in your team is extremely important.

How do you balance your racing career with school?

It can be really tough at times to balance my sport and school – there is a lot of travelling and training. Time allocation is important. I’m also in touch with my teachers, and when needed discuss alternative dates for exams.

Which VSV values do you identify with most and why?

Growth and respect. I’ve grown up in a community of people older than me. I respect people who have been in the sport for longer than I have been alive. I try to learn as much from them as I can. This knowledge helps me grow not only as a driver but also as a person.
