Overview
Sociology explores how societies work and what influences people’s behaviour. It encourages you to question everyday life and examine social issues from different perspectives.
You will study both Australian and global contexts, investigating culture, identity, community and social change.

Example assessment timeline
Each unit runs over a 16-week study period. Enrolled students will receive a course timetable with key dates, assessment deadlines and important milestones. Download an example timeline:
Unit 1: Culture and ethnicity
- Culture and ethnicity in Australia, focusing on First Nations cultures and migrant communities.
- The historical suppression and growing recognition of Australian Indigenous cultures, including different perspectives.
- Experiences of ethnicity in Australia, and how it is shaped by cultural, political and social influences.
- Using ethical methodology to research social groups.
Unit 2: Community, social movements and social change
- The concept of community and how it is defined and changed over time, for example online communities. How social, political, economic and technological factors affect communities.
- Social movements and their role in creating social change, including their purpose and impact.
