Year 11 Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2
Overview
In Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2, there are four broad Areas of Study:
- Functions and Graphs
- Algebra
- Calculus
- Probability and Statistics.
You will progressively develop your skills and knowledge in each of the four areas, and the connections between them.
Who is it for?
Are you planning to do further study with a view of a career in Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering?
Are you interested in how aspects of the world can be explained by mathematical processes?
For example, Mathematics underlies the modelling of weather patterns.
If so, then Mathematical Methods is the right course for you.
What do you do?
Throughout the course, you will complete weekly assignments, practice exercises, activities, modelling and problem-solving tasks, and a test at the end of each semester.
What skills do you need?
You need to have good algebraic skills. If you have not studied Mathematics for some time, you are advised to revise the algebraic component of the Year 10 Mathematics course.
What skills do you develop?
When you have completed the course, you should be able to:
- apply mathematical processes in non-routine contexts and discuss these applications
- use technology to produce results and carry out analysis in situations that require problem solving, or investigative techniques.
Requirements
Internet is needed to access this course. All work will be completed and submitted online weekly.
Required Resources:
CAS technology:
- for this study, you need access to a VCAA-approved CAS technology. VSV course notes are written using the TI-Nspire CAS and Casio ClassPad calculators. The textbook also contains instructions for both TI-Nspire CAS and Casio ClassPad calculators. However, any of the listed VCAA-approved CAS technologies can be used
- further information on VCAA-approved technology is available on their website
- if buying a new calculator, it is highly recommended to purchase a TI-Nspire CX CAS
- you are encouraged to contact your Mathematics teacher for advice before purchasing a calculator.
Textbook:
- Cambridge Senior Mathematics Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 – you have the option of either purchasing the textbook or the eBook.
Things to think about
You will be expected to spend approximately 7 hours per week on Mathematical Methods.
You should have a good knowledge of the Year 10 Mathematics curriculum.
You can contact your teacher for help via phone, email, messaging through your online course or in person.
Things you can do now
If you struggled with algebra in Year 10, then we advise you to revise the following topics:
- factorisation
- linear equations
- linear graphs
- rearranging formulas
- algebraic fractions.
You can work through Chapter 1 of your Cambridge textbook. Your online textbook also provides access to Year 10 resources.
