
Primary – Bringing science to life through hands-on learning
For many primary students, science is about discovering, questioning and exploring the world around them. Through on-site science incursions, VSV students can experience practical investigations that spark curiosity and make classroom concepts come alive. We spoke with Tania Giarratana, our Science Laboratory Technician, about why hands-on science is such an important part of learning in the primary years.
What makes a live science experience so memorable for younger learners?
Primary students become very excited when they come into our science lab. Before they begin their experiments, they learn about the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and have the opportunity to wear a lab coat, safety glasses, and gloves. I think the experience is so memorable because it is something different for them. They get to meet their teachers and classmates in person, explore real laboratory equipment, and observe the changes and outcomes of experiments firsthand—often for the very first time.
How do you see curiosity transform into confidence during an incursion?
Children are naturally curious, and once they know the experiments are safe, their confidence quickly grows. They become more willing to ask questions, try new things and investigate what is happening. If an experiment doesn’t work as expected, they learn to change variables and try a different approach. They soon discover that science is about exploring, learning from results, and trying again.
Science can sometimes feel abstract in a textbook. How does getting hands-on change students’ understanding?
Hands-on learning in the laboratory gives students the opportunity to see science in action. Instead of simply reading about scientific concepts, they can observe changes as they happen and better understand why those changes occur. It also encourages students to discuss their observations, compare results and learn from one another. These shared experiences help build confidence, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of science.
What surprises you most about the way primary students engage with science?
I am always surprised by how enthusiastic and engaged the students are. They listen carefully, follow instructions and are genuinely excited to see the results of their experiments. They also work well together, helping one another and asking lots of thoughtful questions. Their curiosity and eagerness to learn make every session enjoyable.
What do you hope students take away from these experiences?
I hope students leave feeling confident and excited about science. I also hope they feel comfortable returning to VSV for future Connect Days and incursions, having made connections with their teachers and classmates along the way. Most of all, I hope their time in the science lab sparks a lasting curiosity and inspires them to continue studying science as they move into secondary school.
