We know that parenting and supporting learning from home can sometimes feel challenging. You play a vital role in your child’s learning journey, and feeling confident in that role makes a big difference for both you and your child.
This guide is designed to empower you with practical ideas and reassurance so you can support your child’s engagement, connection and confidence in online classrooms – without added stress. Small, thoughtful steps from home can help your child feel seen, supported and ready to learn, while helping you feel equipped and confident in your support.
How Parents and Carers Can Support Their VSV Learner
Talk about the “why” in using their webcam
- Help your child understand that webcams help teachers connect with students and support their learning.
- Reinforce that camera use helps teachers notice when students may need help or encouragement.
- Acknowledge that it can feel uncomfortable at first – this is completely normal.
Encourage class participation in small, predictable ways
You might encourage your child to:
- Turn their camera on at the start or end of lessons.
- Use their camera during small group activities or presentations.
- Build confidence gradually rather than feeling they must be on camera all lesson.
Support comfort and confidence
If your child feels nervous or reluctant, you could:
- Talk with them about what feels challenging.
- Help them explore options such as virtual backgrounds or adjusting their workspace.
- Encourage small steps, such as turning their camera on briefly or during selected activities.
- Remind them that confidence often grows with practice.
Keep communication open
- Encourage your child to speak with their teacher if they feel unsure or anxious.
- Reach out to VSV if you notice ongoing concerns about engagement or wellbeing.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff to find strategies that suit your child.
Remember there are many ways to participate
Camera use supports connection, but it is not the only way students engage. Students may also:
- Contribute through chat or online discussions
- Use reactions, polls, or collaborative documents
- Participate using their microphone
- Demonstrate learning through submitted work
All meaningful participation is valued. Our shared aim is to help students feel safe, supported, and connected in their learning. Thank you for partnering with us to help your child thrive.
