In the last edition of VSV Life, we heard about the meaningful impact that our Learning Advisors can have in supporting Senior School students. As an extension of this support, a group of students engaged in the Term 1 Connect Day program, delivered by social enterprise, Skyline Hatch. Led by recent high-achieving VCE graduates, the sessions combined relatable lived experience with practical study strategies, offering students clear, achievable ways to strengthen their approach to online learning.
A key message underpinning the program was the importance of building a strong foundation, brought to life through an icebreaker activity where students worked together to construct towers. This simple exercise highlighted a powerful idea: that a solid base is essential not only for academic success, but for approaching challenges with confidence, both at school and beyond.
Senior School years can feel overwhelming. Motivation can dip and knowing where to start — or restart — is often the hardest part. Upcoming sessions delivered by Skyline Hatch are designed to meet students in that space. In close consultation with our Senior School leadership team, the Mid-Year Motivator session will directly address the mid-year slump often experienced in the VCE years, with a focus on practical strategies and positive mindset coaching.
Previous sessions of the Mid-Year Motivator program have been well received, offering students actionable steps to manage self-doubt and navigate those persistent questions of ‘can I do this?’
In this way, students are supported to steadily build momentum, recognising that progress is often made through small, consistent steps — the “little wins” that lead to meaningful achievement over time.
Students who couldn’t attend the Term 1 session can revisit the content covered:
- Headstart: Study Skills (from Tuesday 10 February) Watch on Demand
- Time Management and Effective scheduling (from Wednesday 11 March) Watch on Demand
Skyline Hatch also recommends some reflection over the term break, to reinforce the ‘solid base’ for Term 2. While the holidays are a time of rest and relaxation, if can be beneficial to make plans for changes necessary to support your year:
- Reflect on your current schedule and “to do” lists. Consider
- Did they work effectively for you?
- Do you need to adjust create a better balance between your personal life and academic commitments?
- Remember to value rest time—sleep is essential for your learning and wellbeing. If your previous schedule was not effective, take this opportunity to set up a new one that better supports your goals.
