A new school year brings a fresh start. New routines, new goals and new opportunities to grow.

The Middle Years are an important time of change. You are building independence, strengthening your voice and learning how to manage your time, your learning and your responsibilities. At VSV, this stage of schooling is designed to support you to move forward with confidence, both academically and personally.

Whatever your pathway into online learning, you belong here. Learning online does not mean learning alone. Connection is built through everyday actions such as contributing in Chat, collaborating in group work, joining a club or simply showing up consistently. Each small step helps you feel more confident and more connected.

Participation can feel challenging at times. That is normal. Confidence develops gradually. Middle Years teacher Jeanette has shared some practical strategies that many students find helpful when building their confidence in online classes:

  • Attend lessons. Being present is the first and most important step.
  • It is okay to observe at first and gradually step into engagement when you feel ready. Your teacher recognises that this is part of preparing to learn.
  • If you feel comfortable, turn your camera on, whether that is your face, your pet or something that represents you.
  • Personalise your Teams profile with an avatar or photo instead of just initials so your teachers can get to know you.
  • Use emojis or short responses in Chat to show you are listening and following along.
  • Read what others are posting and, when ready, add your own response or ask a question.
  • Raise your hand and contribute verbally if invited and you feel prepared to do so.
  • Complete the task during or soon after the lesson to demonstrate your understanding, regardless of how you participated.

Belonging also grows through peer connection. Jeanette encourages students to take small steps in building community:

  • Acknowledge another student’s comment with an emoji or short reply.
  • Build on someone else’s idea in Chat to show you are engaging with their thinking.
  • If you would like to connect with someone outside of lessons, speak with your Learning Advisor about arranging a family-supported introduction.
  • Join a VSV Club to meet students who share your interests.
  • Take part in Connect Weeks, which offer both online and in person opportunities to connect beyond regular classes.

Developing independence and self-management is a key focus in the Middle Years. Organising your time, keeping track of tasks and communicating when you need support are all part of learning how to take ownership of your education. You are not expected to do this perfectly. You are learning how to do it well.

Our students often tell us that belonging at VSV grows over time:

“I have rarely had a positive experience in school, and the teachers were actually nice, and I have never felt this connected to a group of people in my class or grade.”

“I have enjoyed my learning at VSV. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and be connected with people as I can’t attend school because of my illness.”

“VSV’s community is so amazing, and I am grateful to be a student here.”

Camps, excursions and Connect Weeks also give students valuable time to build friendships in person. It is often in these informal moments, through shared activities and conversation, that confidence and connection deepen.

“The Connect Weeks were really fun, and I made a couple of friends, which is really nice.”

Middle Years is about progress. It is about learning who you are, discovering what works for you and taking steady steps forward. With the right supports in place, every student can continue to grow in confidence across the year.
