Strength in Every Step: How Mason turned Challenge into Purpose
For Year 9 student Mason, success looks like doing what matters: a value shaped deeply by his family. Acting entirely on his own initiative, he saw an opportunity to make a difference and stepped forward to take on a 35-kilometre charity walk in support of mitochondrial disease, a cause close to his heart. Raising an impressive $500, Mason drew on the discipline strengthened through online learning to prepare, persevere, and stay the course. While the challenge was truly student-driven, the training journey offered precious family bonding time and a chance for Mason to uncover strengths he hadn’t yet fully recognised.
“I was incredibly proud when Mason said he wanted to take on a 35km charity walk. Supporting causes that make a difference has always been important to our family, so it was really heartening to see him embrace that value and take it on in such a big way. Above all, I admired his determination to challenge himself for something meaningful,” says his mum, Nikki.
While Nikki’s pride is unmistakable, the heart of the story sits with Mason, who approached the walk with focus and quiet confidence. His preparation began long before event day, shaped by a genuine desire to make a meaningful impact.
“I took on the 35km walk to support mitochondrial disease. This cause means a lot to me because it affects people in serious ways and there’s still so much we don’t know about it. I wanted to do something that could help raise awareness and funds to make a difference,” Mason shares.
Nikki also sheds light on the planning and training that took place well before the event:
“Behind the scenes, I helped with planning and making sure Mason had everything he needed for the challenge. It was wonderful to see him and his dad complete the long walks together beforehand—having his dad by his side was a huge source of support and motivation. Watching Mason prepare and then follow through on the day was incredible; I felt proud, inspired, and amazed at his determination every step of the way.”
Reflecting on the effort it took to reach the finish line, Mason notes the moments of doubt he had to overcome:
“Finishing the walk made me realise I’m capable of more than I give myself credit for. There were moments when I felt like stopping, but I kept moving forward. It showed me that with determination and a clear reason why, I can achieve big goals.”
From Nikki’s viewpoint, the walk wasn’t just a physical challenge but a milestone in Mason’s personal growth.
“I’ve seen him grow so much through this challenge. Emotionally, Mason has become more resilient, learning to push through discomfort and stay focused on his goals. Most of all, I’ve seen his confidence grow—knowing he’s capable of great things when committing to something important.”
On the meaning of success, Nikki says:
“From my perspective, success for Mason isn’t about the outcome—it’s about his commitment and his ability to push himself through challenging situations to achieve great things. This experience reflected that perfectly. He showed determination, resilience, and focus, proving to himself what he can accomplish when he gives his all.”
Nikki also reflects on how online learning contributed to this achievement:
“Encouraging your child to explore personal goals or support community causes can be incredibly rewarding. Online learning teaches independence and self-discipline and combining that with a meaningful challenge helps them build confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose. Supporting them along the way, whether through encouragement, planning, or joining them in activities, makes the experience even more memorable and inspiring for the whole family.”
The charity walk may be complete, but its impact continues. Mason’s achievement is a reminder that meaningful change often begins with a single, determined step. By choosing to challenge himself for a cause greater than his own comfort, Mason proved what focus, heart and perseverance can achieve. His efforts show that young people are capable of remarkable things when they channel their strengths with intention, and that even one student’s initiative can create a ripple of hope for others.
