As well as being a pleasant way of whiling away an hour or two, the act of reading provides a range of personal advantages and benefits:
Through sustained reading, you can increase your vocabulary, enhance your writing skills and build your knowledge and understanding in your interests.
Reading can build your social skills and understanding. For example, by being immersed in a character’s viewpoint and experience, you could develop empathy and gain a different perspective.
Reading fuels imagination, leading the reader on many journeys to new and amazing worlds and ideas. Reading can also embark on a wild rollercoaster of emotions, as the reader becomes enthralled and absorbed in a thrilling plot or compelling characters.
These students know this all too well. As we ‘celebrate success’ in this eNews edition, we congratulate the following VSV students who completed the 2025 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge:
Sithruu (Year 3), Olivia, Noah & Ava (Year 6), Mabel & Agnes (Year 7), Lina (Year 8), Cynta & Zephie (Year 9), Anjali & Dheenah (Year 10).
This keen band of readers relished the opportunity to further explore and enhance their reading, and to discover new worlds and vistas.
With its mission to get more Australians reading, Reading Australia provides a range of reading-related resources, news and research articles.
Holiday reading
The following are suggested for reading information and inspiration over the long summer break:
ePlatform. Our free online library of eBooks has a great and wide-ranging collection; there are books galore, including many old favourites and exciting new titles, with regular updates and new additions. There are also VSV Reading Lists for reading inspiration.
Audiobooks add a new and exciting dimension to the reading experience. A family road trip, for example, could be enlivened by the sharing of a favourite read on the car stereo. A well-chosen and eloquent narrator can engage through their reading. A dramatised reading, with a cast of readers, is a great means of bringing book characters and dialogue to life.
Students can register via ePlatform and need to enter their VSV student number as their login, as this will be used to confirm registration.
