When Dakota started at VSV (formerly DECV) in 2017, she faced significant challenges. Struggling with physical pain and anxiety, her confidence was at an all-time low after being bullied at school; even paying a cashier felt overwhelming.

Now, after four years of studying VCE, Dakota is completing school and excited to make new friends while studying writing at university.

“There were times when I almost gave up. I’ve had lots of doubts over the years, as people my age often get through things much faster than me. I felt really behind. But at the same time, I knew I could do it. I needed to keep pushing,” Dakota explained.

She credits VSV’s incredible support system for her success.

“When I started at VSV, I was too terrified to email or call my teachers, or turn my camera on in class. I needed help but didn’t know how to ask for it,” she said.

Dakota says her Learning Advisor over the past four years, Pippa, played a key role in her growth.

“It’s hard to know how to help yourself when you’re struggling. Pippa went out of her way to support me—whether through regular check-ins to keep me accountable or teaching me the Pomodoro technique to help me focus and study.”

“The last few years have been physically and mentally challenging. I wouldn’t have got through school if it wasn’t for VSV,” reflected Dakota.
