Angus is a Year 12 student at VSV. He’s also an elite junior motorcyclist who currently lives in Spain. Angus started studying at VSV three and a half years ago.
Why are you living in Spain?
I compete in the highest level of junior motorcycle racing, the FIM JuniorGP World Championship. The races are all held in Europe and my team is Spanish. Spain has the best training, with the world’s fastest racers!
How did you get into motorcycle racing?
I got into motorcycles when I was around three years old, because my father and grandfather love motorbikes. I just loved to go fast.
What would a typical training week look like for you?
Running around 60-70 kms per week, cycling around 300kms, and training on my training motorbikes 2-3 times a week. I also go to the gym and use the simulator. My gym has programs specifically for motorcycle racers.
What’s been your biggest achievement to date?
Scoring my first World Championship points in the latest round of the championship in Portimão, Portugal.
What do you have to give up to achieve this high level of performance?
I pretty much have to give up my teen years and move away from friends, family and where I grew up. But I am happy to do it because I love racing so much.
How do you bounce back when things may not go your way on the circuit?
I keep telling myself that I can do it, keep my head down and work even harder.
I also have to remember things won’t always go my way. Last year I had a couple of broken bones in my hand from a crash. This was difficult, as I missed three rounds of the season. I had to bounce back, keep training and believe in myself.
How has VSV enabled you to pursue your sporting pursuits with getting a good education?
Most racers that come from Australia to Europe stop their schooling. I didn’t want to do that. I know it’s important to finish my VCE and it’s also good for my mind to keep up my studies. VSV is really easy to follow along with the content and submissions.
What has surprised you about VSV?
VSV is very welcoming and the teachers are always willing to offer their support and help.
What do you want to do when you finish Year 12?
Race motorbikes! I would like to win a world championship title in the senior World Moto3 Championship, and one day win in MotoGP. Whatever I do, it will be bike related.
